New Maps

The new legislative maps are now available.

You will quickly notice that we now have five legislative districts.  They are the 112th, 113th, 114th, 117th, and 118th.  We lost the 115th District to Monroe County and picked up two new districts - the 117th and 118th.

The 117th Legislative District Representative is Republican Karen Boback.  You can view her campaign website here.

Absentee Voting

Our busy schedules make it difficult to vote in every election. Sometimes, our work schedules don't allow it. Other times, we might be sick, have a loved one who is ill, or maybe we cannot physically make it to the polls.

Whatever the reason is, I thought I would take a minute to make sure you are aware of another way to vote, other than appearing in person…absentee voting.

If you are unable to make it to the polls due to illness, travel, or many other reasons you can vote by mail with an absentee ballot.  It is a very simple two-step process.  First, you must send in a request for a ballot to the County Board of Elections in time for them to receive it by October 29th (you can download a form here.)  The county will then process your request and reserve a ballot for you.

A few week before the election, they will you mail you a ballot.  Once you receive it, you simply fill out your ballot and mail it back in so that the Board of Election receives it prior to November 1st.  They will then send your ballot to your polling location and count it on election night.

Absentee voting is a very easy process and, if your situation requires it, I would like to encourage you to use it.

Your vote is critical to the success of many candidates this year.

If you can make it to the polls but are unsure of where to vote, you can call Lackawanna County Voter Services at (570) 963-6737 and they will be able to look you up and tell you exactly where your polling place is.  You can also visit www.votespa.com to find your polling place.

Mulligan for Mayor

Tonight, the Executive Board of the Republican Party of Lackawanna County voted to nominate Atty. Jim Mulligan as the Republican Party’s nominee to replace Garett Lewis.  GOP Chairman Lance Stange released the following statement:

“Every election is important, but when a city is in crisis, the consequences of each election leave a far deeper impression on its future.  The November Election will be a critical moment in Scranton’s history.

“With that in mind, we put out the call for an experienced, educated, well-prepared mayoral candidate that is ready to lead the City of Scranton on day one.

“Jim Mulligan answered that call and we are united behind him.  Jim rightfully understands that the difficulties we are experiencing offer us a unique opportunity to resolve our finances, strengthen our community, and grow our local economy with the cooperation of all of Scranton’s stakeholders – something that hasn’t been possible before.

Vacancy Announced for Mayoral Candidate

Lewis Leaves Race, Remains Dedicated to City of Scranton

Scranton, PA – Paperwork was filed this morning with the Lackawanna County Bureau of Elections to formally and officially announce the withdrawal of Garett Lewis as the Republican candidate for the office of Mayor of the City of Scranton.  Mr. Lewis’s withdrawal creates a vacancy that the Republican Party will work to fill.

“The Republican Party would like to express its gratitude to Mr. Lewis for putting himself forward as a candidate for Mayor.  His financial background and expertise drove the debate toward Scranton’s finances – an area of great concern to all taxpayers of the city of Scranton, regardless of their political affiliation.  That very same expertise has unexpectedly grown Mr. Lewis’s business, making it impossible for him to dedicate the time necessary to campaign for this office,” said Chairman Lance Stange.

“I want to stress that while this can no longer be my full time focus, I remain dedicated to addressing the systemic drivers of the city's financial crisis and look forward to working with the new Republican candidate,” added Mr. Lewis.

Stange continued, “The Republican Party will work diligently to put forward an experienced, educated, and well-prepared candidate for Mayor of the City of Scranton who the people of our great city can put their faith in to improve Scranton’s financial condition, quality of life, and local economy.”

The Old Forge Republican Committee will meet on Monday, 8 July 2013 at 6:30 PM. 

The meeting will be held at the Old Forge Borough Building.

GOP Government Study Commissioner Candidates

The 2013 Primary Election is critically important.  We will not only be nominating candidates for the standard offices throughout the county, but we will also be electing candidates for Government Study Commissioner. 

If approved, this commission will study our current form of government and propose changes to how we do business as a county.  Their recommendations will then be put to the voters, in the form of a ballot question, for adoption or rejection.

It is critical that we, as Republicans, have representation on this commission.

We, as a party, were very successful in recruiting candidates for these important positions – 17 of the 38 candidates are Republicans. 

As a voter, you may only vote for seven candidates for these positions.  If you vote for more than seven, your vote will not count.  As a Republican, we are asking you to choose your seven candidates from the 17 Republicans running.

Executive Committee Issues Endorsements

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Scranton, PA – Last night, the Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Lackawanna County held candidate interviews.  Following that, the Executive Committee made the following endorsements:

Andy Jarbola for Lackawanna County District Attorney

Alicia DiLeo for Lackawanna County Recorder of Deeds

Christopher Arnone for Lackawanna County Register of Wills

The committee also endorsed the creation of a Government Study Commission to examine Lackawanna County’s form of government, and rejected the consolidation questions proposed by the commissioners.

A vote for an open primary for the office of Sheriff and Judge of the Court of Common Pleas was successful.

“In the Sheriff’s race, we have two candidates that possess unique skill sets that qualify them to hold the office,” said Chairman Lance Stange.  “Dominick Manetti’s first-hand experience and working knowledge of the office of Sheriff is impressive.  His understanding of the job, learned by moving through ranks and rising to the position of Chief Deputy, proves that he will be ready to lead the Sheriff’s Department on day one.  Joseph Albert’s leadership skills and training, finely honed over years of service to our country in the armed forces, have no doubt prepared him to serve the people of Lackawanna County as their next Sheriff.  Because both candidates are qualified, experienced, and well prepared to serve the people of Lackawanna County the committee voted to have an open primary with a pledge to support the candidate that prevails in the Primary Election.”

Chairman Stange continued, “The Republican Party supports the idea of constantly examining how we, as a county, can best serve our taxpayers.  Both the attempt to make the Sheriff an appointed position and the proposed consolidation of offices into a new political appointment have one thing in common – they rob a fundamental power from the people, the power to choose who it is they believe best represents them, and place it in the hands of Lackawanna County’s politicians.  Any consolidation or modification of our system of government must also empower the people of Lackawanna County, not its politicians.  We are calling on the people of Lackawanna County to support the formation of a Government Study Commission as the best option available to us to seek this improvement of government and reject the remaining questions.”

Sad news...

Yesterday, Ray Nearhood passed away.  Ray served the Republican Party of Lackawanna County as its treasurer, as a district committee man, and as a candidate for public office.

Ray was an educated, experienced, and honorable man that will be sorely missed by all that knew him.

The funeral will be Saturday with Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Thomas More Parish at St. Joseph's Church, 1625 N. Main Ave., Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Eric Bergman, pastor. Interment wlll be Monday at 1 p.m. at Allport Cemetery, Clearfield County, Pa.

Friends may call Saturday, 10 to 11, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas More Parish, 116 Theodore St., Scranton, PA 18508.
